Tanks portal. There are three main operational Abrams versions, the M1, M1A1, and M1A2, with each new iteration seeing improvements in armament, protection, and electronics. Efforts to develop an M1A3 version were first publicly disclosed in The resulting design, the MBTincorporated new technologies across the board.

A hydropneumatic suspension provided excellent cross-country ride quality and also allowed the entire tank to be raised or lowered by the driver, with the lowest position placing the top of the tank only 6 feet 1.

While the design was highly capable, its weight continued to grow, as did its budget. Bythe unit cost stood at five times the original estimates. As a result of the problems with the MBT, the U. Army introduced the XM, using some technologies from the MBT but removing some of the more troublesome features.

This succeeded only in producing an expensive system with capabilities similar to the M After several rounds of input, the decision was made to offer maximum armor to defeat the "heavy threat". To this end, a new design basis emerged in FebruaryLK It had to defeat any hit from a Soviet gun within meters and 30 degrees to either side. Examining the experiences of the Yom Kippur War that year, a number of design changes were made.

At the time, the US military's procurement system was beset with problems being caused by the desire to have the best possible design. This often resulted in the programs being canceled due to cost overruns, leaving the forces with outdated systems, as was the case with the MBT There was a strong movement within the Army to get a new design within budget to prevent the MBT experience from repeating itself.

Chrysler and GM entered bids. The Army was planning on introducing several new types of ammunition for the that would greatly improve its performance, notably, the XM using depleted uranium. These rounds would give it the performance needed to defeat any Soviet tank with ease.As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases from the links on this site.

Thanks for your support. An improved version of the M1, the M1A1 was introduced around These guns, loaded with depleted-uranium shells, proved extraordinarily lethal to the tanks. What makes the M1A1 a leader in tank design is it's ability to fire on a target, even while operating at top speed.

Once the barrel weapons system is locked on a target, no matter what kind of uneven terrain is covered or how the tank corners, the barrel stays locked on the target. Building Scale Jeep Models. It is named after General Creighton Abrams, former Army chief of staff and commander of the United States military forces in the Vietnam War from to The Abrams is highly mobile, designed for modern armoured ground warfare. These improvements and other upgrades to in-service tanks have allowed this long serving vehicle to remain in front line service, in addition to this, development for improved M1 A3 was reported in RM M1A1 Abrams Desert Storm Edition.

First impressions well the art work on the box really grabs you with a war torn background of burning oil wells and the Abrams in the foreground driving past them with turret trained on the scene. The second box with a Chinook coming in to land with the Abrams in the foreground having an engine replacement, both of the art work is very good. So onto the first one RM the Abrams M1A1, after prising the lid of the box the amount of plastic that Rye field manage to get into the box is always amazing to say the least.

It is literally packed inside like a jig saw puzzle where each sprue has a certain way of fitting. One thing you cannot say about Rye field is that they are stingy on the plastic, both boxes are overflowing with it. RM Abrams Detail of the kit is exquisite with the non slip surface on top of the turret, the recessed inner opening commanders gunners hatches look good. It seems like Rye field really have given this a lot of thought and really brought a lot of accuracy to the kit. The commanders copula, the details on it with rivets on the outer ring and all round the optic covers for all round vision whilst inside the tank.

The wheels if they were food would be just delicious the amount of detail on the drive and idle parts had me just staring at them in disbelieve, I even went on google and took a look at some actual wheel shots Rye field you have it spot on.

The gun big bold and what you would expect from an American tank yet again Rye field have faithfully copied every part to a high standard. The bottom of the hull although some of it you will not be able to see once built is full of detail for the road wheels and suspension, the only blemishes that I could see were two pin marks on the underside of the hull which could be easily sorted out if it was a issue to you.

The upper hull just like the turret is full of detail with loads of non slip in all the key areas that you would expect to see it. Lots of moulded detail on the upper hull that includes the hatches and grills that add to the realism of the Abrams. There are so many sprues full of detailed parts it is quite difficult to know where to start with them. I was shocked about the amount of detail on the 50mm machine gun the like that I have rarely seen on moulded plastic and is more like the detail from a resin part.

Boxes, water containers and the fuel containers all looking exactly how you would want them too, well detailed.A picture has popped-up online showing the latest variant of the Army's M1 Abrams tank with what appears to be a new armor package on its turret.

The U. Army is already in the process of adding the Trophy active protection system to the vehicles, which will help guard against anti-tank guided missiles and infantry anti-tank rockets. But the service is also interested adding additional passive armor in light of the threat of potential adversaries, such as Russia, with their own upgraded tanks and new armor-piercing shells. It was one of a series of pictures marking a visit by U. General Dynamics Land Systems is in charge of the upgrade program.

There do not appear to be any specific announcements about improved passive armor for the M1A2 SEPv3 in the past beyond statements that the variant would include added ballistic protection.

Earlier pictures of the prototype M1A2 SEPv3s show weights on the front of the turret, as well as similar weights on the hull front. There had been no indication, however, that the final turret shape would change significantly.

The final design, however, did not feature any radical changes to the turret general shape. It could also be an additional applique armor package that the Army is simply evaluating at this time and might not end up in the final M1A2 SEPv3 configuration.

The added passive armor would just be the latest in a series of defensive additions to the M1A2 SEPv3 configuration.

When an incoming projectile hits them, they explode outward, helping to prevent it from penetrating into the vehicle. But ERA works best against tank shells, anti-tank guided missiles, or other anti-tank weapons that use high-explosive anti-tank warheads. These warheads need to detonate at a very precise point from the side of their target to be most effective. The explosive tiles can destroy or prematurely detonate them, causing them to malfunction.

The Army first announced it would install the Israeli-made defensive system on its tanks in September Unfortunately, these systems are far less effective against fast-flying kinetic penetratorssuch as those in modern armor-piercing discarding-sabot tank shells, which rely on sheer force to break through armor. So, there is still a need for a passive armor layer to defend against these threats. That the Army might now be interested in additional armor protection beyond what it had previously planned for the M1A2 SEPv3 would make sense.

There has been a general shift in focus within the U. At the same time, Russia has been working on a fleet of upgraded tanks, as well as continuing to work on the new T Armata. Though the Russian Army looks years away from acquiring any meaningful numbers of the T, it has made significant improvements to its existing T, T, and T tanks. The latest TMSs use the same 2A82 mm main gun as the T, which allows them to use higher-velocity ammunition. The Russians developed the 2A82 specifically to not require any additional internal space inside a turret over the previous 2A46, which makes it readily adaptable to existing tanks with the older gun.

The problem with more passive armor is that it also adds significant additional weight to the Abrams, which could limit its mobility. The existing variants of the tank tip the scales at more than 70 tons, making them some of the heaviest main battle tanks in the world.

Separate upgrades to help the M1 simply out-range opponents might help mitigate the need for further passive armor upgrades to defeat increasingly threatening kinetic ammunition. The Army is in the process of developing the next iteration of the Abrams, known variously as the M1A2 SEPv4 or M1A2Dwhich is set to feature greatly improved sensors to increase the range at which it can spot and engage threats.

An improved gun, either a longer barrel variant of the tanks existing mm, or a larger caliber design altogether, will probably be part of the new variant, as well. The Army has talked in the past about networking the tanks together with other vehicles, including unmanned ground vehiclesas well as unmanned aerial vehicles, in order to use precision-guided rounds against targets beyond its own line-of-sight.

But added range is not something that armored units will always be able to take advantage of, especially in dense urban environments, which the U.The M1 is designed for a four-person crew. The driver sits in the front section of the hull, directly under the main gun. In order to fit in the confined space, he has to lean way back in a reclining, form-fitting bucket seat, sort of like a dentist chair.

M1 crew members say that this is far and away the most comfortable position in the tank. The driver steers the tank using a motorcycle-style handlebar, and accelerates by twisting a handle grip throttle. The tank has a brake pedal on the floor, just like a car. The driver navigates using three periscopes also called vision blocks. For night operations, he can substitute a night vision sensor for one of the ordinary periscopes.

The driver also has a digital instrument panel, called the driver's integrated display DIDwhich provides navigational data, as well as information about things like speed, fluid level and engine performance.

The rest of the crew works in the turret basket the turret's interior compartment. The loader rides on the left side of the turret, toward the back; the gunner rides on the right side, towards the front; and the commander rides on the right side, towards the back. The commander oversees the tank's operation, communicates with other tank commanders and directs the rest of the crew. He has several periscopes and a joystick-controlled independent thermal night vision viewer to survey the battlefield.

He can monitor the tank's various systems and its position on his integrated display. The gunner targets enemy vehicles and bunkers and fires the main gun. He pinpoints targets using a stabilized sight, with day vision and thermal night vision capabilities, and a laser range-finder that precisely measures the distance to the target.

He also controls the front machine gun and monitors the main gun's general condition. The loader pulls rounds from the ammunition compartment and load them into the main gun. Generally, the gunner tells the loader which sort of round to load. The loader and commander may also operate the two machine guns mounted on top of the turret.

Speeches on shoes

On the M1A2, they have to open the tank's two hatches and fire the guns manually, so it's not a viable option in a tank battle. The machine guns are mainly for attacking infantry soldiers. Using IVIS, commanders keep track of the other tanks' positions, transmit maps and share information about the enemy. In order to hide communications from the enemy, the system uses encrypted radio signals. The combination of these advanced electronics, incredibly strong armor and massive firepower make the M1 an almost unbeatable opponent in tank warfare.

But evolving technology will eventually surpass the M1, and the weapon will take its place alongside the dozens of other tanks that have come and gone over the years. In the world of military science, technological superiority has a short life span. There is no Tamiya Abrams kit that includes an interior.

CMK makes an engine compartment too. Verlinden did an old set that was supposed to be for the upper turret and driver's area as well.

Nwchem methods

It was pretty far off and not really usable though. For just a decent Abrams, Tamiya's kits are OK. They build easily and have so-so details. It should be awesome as well. A tip on the Bradley, if you want to do a really detailed one, Meng make s a couple modern ones M2A3 and M3A3 with full interiors to include turret interior and full engine compartments.

They are awesome. Also, the M3A3 interior is a separate kit that you can add common parts from to the Tamiya kit for extra details.

The real reason for the upper hull poly caps was the need to remove the upper hull to replace batteries, but for some reason Tamiya never released a motorized version of this kit. Most of their kits they released in the s and s used the poly caps for this reason. Their M used the commander's seat stand to remove the roof to display the interior. It was rather ingenious at the time.

A good kit to display with interior would be the Academy MA2. It served along side the Bradley and Abrams. It took some getting used to until they upgraded the tranny.

I have to limit myself to just a few armor kits because I already have a huge pile of other models waiting to be built but probably not all by me I won't live long enough. I chose this kit for three reasons. First, I grew up in a small town that had a Bradley transmission testing facility quite close to my home.

The hull top is held on by Tamiya's omnipresent "poly caps" so it can be lifted off to reveal the interior Third, I just think the BFV looks really cool.

I don't really have a version preference; I'd just like a nice, complete, well-detailed kit. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to you all! Good luck and be sure to post some pics when you get started on them.

The first attempt to replace the aging M60 Patton was the MBTdeveloped in partnership with West Germany in the s and reaching the testing stage by The MBT was very ambitious, and had various innovative ideas that ultimately proved unsuccessful.

As a result of the imminent failure of this project, the U. Army introduced the XM This succeeded only in producing an expensive system with capabilities similar to the M Baer as production manager. The Pentagon's requirements specified a tank gun between and mm and a Bushmaster cannon with a caliber between 20 and mm. Plans called for a tank weighing about 54 tons. Chrysler chose a regenerative turbine engine made by Avco Lycoming while General Motors chose a Teledyne Continental diesel engine.

The Pentagon in also allowed the West German Leopard 2 to be tested against the American winner at Aberdeen with the understanding that the better tank would be adopted by both countries.

However the two nations were unable to reconcile their nationalistic differences, so a compromise was made that would have both tanks share common parts. In July the Army recommended selecting the General Motors offering, but the recommendation was disregarded by the Pentagon, which asked competitors to modify their proposals to share parts with the German tank. In November the Army selected Chrysler's design. An improved model called the M1IP was produced briefly in and contained small upgrades.

These exercises usually took place in Western Europeespecially West Germanybut also in some other countries like South Korea. During such training, Abrams crews honed their skills for use against the men and equipment of the Soviet Union. However, by the Soviet state had collapsed and the Abrams would have its trial by fire in the Middle East.

The Abrams remained untested in combat until the Persian Gulf War in The Ts like most Soviet export designs lacked night vision systems and then-modern rangefindersthough they did have some night fighting tanks with older active infrared systems or floodlights—just not the latest starlight scopes and passive infrared scopes as on the Abrams. Only 23 M1A1s were taken out of service in the Persian Gulf [8].

Some others took minor combat damage, with little effect on their operational readiness. Very few M1 tanks were hit by enemy fire, and none were destroyed as a direct result of enemy fire, with no fatalities due to enemy fire. This meant Abrams tanks could hit Iraqi tanks before the enemy got in range—a decisive advantage in this kind of combat. This was not the case for the side armor of the hull and the rear armor of the turret, as both areas were penetrated at least in two occasions by friendly DU ammunition during the Battle of Norfolk.

On the night of February 26,four Abrams were disabled, possibly as a result of friendly fire by Hellfire missiles fired from AH Apache attack helicopterswith the result of some crew members wounded in action. Abrams C was definitively hit and penetrated by a friendly DU shot [13] and there is some evidence that another Iraqi T may have scored a single hit on Bbesides the alleged Hellfire strike. Tanks D and C took some casualties, [14] but only B became a permanent loss.

The DoD's damage assessments state that B was the only M1 with signs of a Hellfire missile found nearby. One of them was hit by enemy fire, the two other embedded in mud. The tanks were destroyed by U. TF1st Armored Division. Hull number:D [28]. These were fitted on the sides and rear of the turret, with flat panels equipped with a four-cornered 'box' image on either side of the turret front these can be seen in the below image, similar flat panels also being employed on British Challenger 2 tanks serving in the conflict.
