Many of these features will no doubt make their way into vSphere at the time of the VMware vSphere 7 release date. As you have no doubt seen across the Internet so far, before VMworld, many were assuming a new version of vSphere vSphere 7 would be announced at one of the VMworld events, either US or Europe and this announcement would be vSphere 7. However, as both VMworld events have come and gone, neither of the events saw the official announcement of vSphere 7 released to the data enter masses, but rather just a slew of features were shown and demonstrated that will no doubt find their way to this release.

It will be interesting to see the vSphere 7 release date when it is announced, however, as we obviously know, it will not happen until next year at this point. Will it be before VMworld ? Only time will tell, however, I suspect it will be.

The next question that most are asking is what features will be included in VMware vSphere 7? There are many that we will no doubt find included with vSphere 7. This vSphere 7 feature will open up a whole slew of new use cases and edge computing business cases that can make good use of the new capability to run ESXi on ARM.

Hybrid cloud features are certainly the big feature that most are looking at across any software upgrade or purchase they are making. There is no question businesses are making use of cloud environments. However, the features and functionality to allow effectively connecting on-premises and cloud environments is highly desirable.

This includes functionality across virtual machines and containers. With the release of VMware Project PacificVMware has solidified its direction of focus as being on containers orchestrated with Kubernetes. Kubernetes is the hot topic in cloud technologies as businesses are looking at making use of microservices architectures instead of the legacy monolithic application structure.

This takes vSphere in a direction of features and functionality that has not been seen thus far, even with vSphere 6. It will be interesting also to see how VMware Workstation might receive these new features as well. The Carbon Black acquisition certainly gives VMware some interesting features and products to integrate into their current vSphere security features. The Carbon Black endpoint agent can certainly now be rolled out by means of vSphere and used to protect endpoints, including Windows server, Linux, and others.

Also, with the maturation of NSX-T and the great new features with the service-defined firewall and the integration with Carbon Black agents now, it is conceivable we will see further a further evolution of the VMware security solution.These offerings provide a new way for organizations to think about their application modernization initiatives.

This is incredibly important to customers as they are continually grappling with the challenge to better meet the needs of their customers. To do that they are increasingly called to deliver applications more quickly and reduce the time to market. After version 4.

ESX runs on bare metal without running an operating system [9] unlike other VMware products. In the historic VMware ESX, a Linux kernel was started first, [11] and is then used to load a variety of specialized virtualization components, including ESX, which is otherwise known as the vmkernel component.

At normal run-time, the vmkernel was running on the bare computer, and the Linux-based service console ran as the first virtual machine. VMware dropped development of ESX at version 4. The vmkernel is a microkernel [14] with three interfaces: hardware, guest systems, and the service console Console OS.

Access to other hardware such as network or storage devices takes place using modules. At least some of the modules derive from modules used in the Linux kernel. To access these modules, an additional module called vmklinux implements the Linux module interface.

The vmkernel uses the device drivers: [18]. These drivers mostly equate to those described in VMware's hardware compatibility list. Programmers have adapted them to run with the vmkernel: VMware Inc. In ESX and not ESXithe Service Console is a vestigial general purpose operating system most significantly used as bootstrap for the VMware kernel, vmkernel, and secondarily used as a management interface.

A number of folks in the VMware community have already started covering some of the amazing capabilities that will be introduced in vSphere and vSAN 7 and I expect to see that ramp up even more in the coming weeks.

One area that I have not seen much coverage on is around homelab usage with vSphere 7. Given this is a pretty significant release, I think there are some things you should be aware of before you rush out and immediately upgrade your existing homelab environment.

As with any vSphere release, you should always carefully review the release notes when they are made available and verify the hardware and its underlying components are officially on the VMware HCL, this is the only way to ensure that you will have a good and working experience. Having said that, here are just a few of the observations that I have made while running pre-GA builds of vSphere 7 in my own personal homelab.

This is not an exhaustive list and I will try to update this article as more information is made available. Disclaimer: The following considerations below is based on my own personal homelab experience using a pre-GA build of vSphere 7 and it does not reflect any official support or guidance from VMware.

Please use these recommendation at your own risk. It should come as no surprise that in vSphere 7, the legacy VMKlinux Drivers will no longer be supported.

I suspect this will have the biggest impact to personal homelabs where unsupported devices such as network or storage adapters require custom drivers built by the community such as any Realtek RTL PCIe-based NICs which are popular in many environments.

Before installing or upgrading, you should check to see if you are currently using any VMKlinux drivers, which you can easily do so with a PowerCLI script that I developed last year which is referenced in this blog post by Niels Hagoort. You should also check with your hardware vendor to see if a new Native Driver is available, as many of our eco-system partners have already finished porting to this new driver format over the past couple of years in preparation for this transition.

Luckily, we have an updated NE driver which is also compatible with ESXi 7 and you just need to create a new ISO containing the updated ne driver. For folks that have had success, feel free to leave a comment and I will update this page as more details are shared. In ESXi 7. I strongly recommend reviewing the following VMware KBs as they may be beneficial if you are running into issues.

I am also happy to report that the ED platform which is another popular system in the VMware community works out of the box with ESXi 7.

I also expect other Supermicro variants to just work as well but I do not have confirmation but given these systems are on VMware's HCL, you should not have any issues.

If you are wondering if ESXi 7 will work on other systems that has not been listed, you can easily verify yourself without affecting your current installation. You can then boot from this new USB device and then install ESXi 7 on the same device which will ensure you do not affect your existing installation. This is something that many folks are still surprise to hear is possible and this is a safe way to "test" a new version of ESXi as long as you do not override or upgrade the underlying VMFS volume format in case there is a new version.

From here, you can verify that your system is operating as expected before attempting to upgrade your existing installation. Memory is always a precious resource and it also usually the first constrained resource in homelabs.

In vSphere 7, the VCSA deployment sizes has been updated to require additional resources to support the various new capabilities. For smaller homelabs, this can be a concern and one approach that many folks have used in the past is to turn off vCenter Server services that you do not plan to use.

If there is no adverse affects on your environment or usage, then this is usually a safe thing to do. Although I do not have any specific recommendations, you can use tools like vimtop to help determine your current memory usage.

Again, this is something that will require a bit of trial and error. If folks have any tips or tricks, feel free to share them in the comments. As with previous releases, I plan to have an updated image to support the latest release.

With that said, there are going to be a couple resource changes to align with the latest ESXi 7 requirements.
